Rethinking the porn industry with NFTs

It’s time to rethink how the adult content industry operates, and who benefits.

Who should benefit? Content creators, and content lovers too.

Today, the industry is dominated by huge platforms run by secretive companies that live in the shadows of the business world, that take a cut as high as 50% from the earnings of content creators and performers.

These platforms keep content creators and performers captive — if a performer is popular on a platform, they risk losing everything if they try to be independent and move to another one. Creators have to keep churning out fresh content every day until they burn out, and the treadmill never stops.

NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are the hot new thing, and could offer a way for content creators to get off this treadmill — but only if the platforms that creators use to create and sell their NFTs aren’t dominated by the same old ways.

The potential is huge. By creating and selling content as NFTs, creators aren’t just selling a peek at their pretty faces (and other bits). NFTs can be unique, like works of art that are owned by a single collector — which is a special relationship between a creator and a collector from which both can benefit. NFTs can also be made in limited editions — like a limited-edition lithograph where there are 200 copies but each one is an original — so that special relationship can be extended to a dozen, or a hundred, or a thousand collectors.

All this is great for people who love adult content, too — besides the opportunity to own a piece of your favorite creator, and the fact that happier creators will make more awesome content, there’s the potential for collectible NFTs to go up in value — and if they do, both collectors and creators benefit. Collectors can sell part of their collection for a profit, and creators can benefit by automatically receiving a percentage of the price every time their work is sold by one collector to another.

But all that can only happen if creators choose the right platform for their NFTs — a platform founded by people who know and work in this industry as creators, who understand that sex work is work, and who will never sell out creators for a bigger buck. The NFT economy isn’t automatically fair — it’s fair only if the NFTs are built that way, and if the platform is run that way.
